Alaskan Malamute

The Alaskan malamute is fiercely loyal to its "pack," loves the children of its own family, and gets along with other animals if socialized with them early on. It must have early obedience classes from an experienced trainer. Leave an untrained malamute alone and he will HOWL!

American Eskimo Dog

Eskies like to be with their families but may appear aloof or uncomfortable with strangers. They prefer adults but will tolerate children and usually get along with dogs and other animals. Early socialization and obedience training are necessary. Eskies are easy to train and like to perform and learn new tricks.

Chinese Shar-Pei

The independent and sometimes stubborn shar-pei is devoted to its family, protective of its territory, and wary of human and animal strangers. Socialization and obedience classes at an early age are a must. The shar-pei does best with respectful children at least five years old. Confrontations with other animals can be a problem.

Chow Chow

The quiet, independent chow chow is a one-person dog. It is not very demonstrative and can be aggressive, stubborn, and difficult to train. Chows are reserved with strangers and have a tendency to bite; deep-set eyes give these dogs poor peripheral vision, making them more likely to bite if surprised from behind.

Finnish Spitz

Finnish spitzes are friendly, active, and lively companions. Eager to please, they do well in obedience classes. These dogs love children and usually get along with other dogs. They will bark when someone is at the door (their bark is part of their hunting persona) but warm up to most people quickly.
