About Bulbs
( Added: Wed Jul 20 2005   Hits: 108)

Bulbs possess such beautiful blooms, it is no wonder they are a popular choice for flower gardens everywhere. A bulb is basically the storage organ of a plant (flower) formed by fleshy leaves. When dormant, these organs can be moved to new locations, or they can be stored before being replanted. A bulb contains a complete flower, along with all the food it needs to bloom.

After I dig up my dahlias and let them dry, how do I separate them? Where do I make the cut, and do
( Added: Tue Jul 19 2005   Hits: 89)

Sometimes it's easier to see where to divide if you wait until spring and divide just prior to planting. Dahlia tubers form a sort of wagon wheel shape with the main stem protruding out of the middle. Each section is capable of producing a new plant, providing it has an "eye." You'll see the bud begin to swell in the spring, and will be able to tell where to cut based upon the position of the eye. Look for it near the top of the tuber near the stem. Cut above the eye. Each tuber with an "eye" can be cut away from the main stem.

Buying Bulbs
( Added: Tue Jul 19 2005   Hits: 107)

Bulbs are great for starter gardens and established gardens alike. Bulbs are incredibly easy to buy and plant. Hardy, or spring-flowering, bulbs have roots that are tough enough to handle even frozen soil, and they will greet you in the spring, year after year, with just a little water, plant food and mulch to keep them growing.

Can daffodils be transplanted immediately after the leaves are completely wilted or must I wait till
( Added: Tue Jul 19 2005   Hits: 96)

Daffodils can be transplanted anytime in the spring if you do it carefully and quickly and water them in well when replanted. As long as the foliage is left to mature and the bulbs are of adequate size, they should bloom next year.
