Sowbugs-Pillbugs

| Sowbugs and pillbugs, sometimes called "woodlice," live outdoors, but they may occasionally enter homes in damp areas such as basements, first floor levels and
garages. These creatures are a nuisance by their presence; they do not bite humans nor damage structures or household possessions. However, if present in large
numbers, they can feed on young plants in greenhouses. Some may crawl into swimming pools and drown, causing complaints. Those that wander into homes
usually die in a few days unless they find a moist place near a leaky pipe or in a damp basement, bathroom or laundry room. |

Spiders

| Many people are afraid of spiders. This fear is partly due to myths and to the notoriety of harmful species such as the brown recluse spider and the black widow
spider. Several species of sac spiders (clubionids) are suspected of being responsible for most spider bites, especially ones occurring indoors (see HYG-2060A).
Sac spider venom is cytotoxic, causing tissues at the bite site to die. However, the vast majority of spiders are harmless to humans. |

Ticks

| The most frequently encountered is the American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis (Say). The adult American dog tick feeds on a wide variety of medium to large
size mammals, such as raccoons, ground hogs, opossum, dogs, and humans. As larvae and nymphs, ticks feed on small mammals (mice and shrews) and birds. The
second most commonly encountered tick in Ohio is Ixodes cookei, sometimes called the ground hog tick. This species can be found on a variety of medium to large
mammals (ground hogs, raccoons, dogs, cats, mink, fox, and humans). It is probably a nest parasite or at least found near animal burrows. It is believed that pets
carry these ticks from the field to where humans can pick them up. |

Wasps

| Occasionally certain parasitic wasps may become a nuisance when found in homes or simply cause concern when single individuals are found. Homeowners may
confuse these insects with winged ants, stinging wasps, or other household/structural pests, causing much alarm. Actually nuisance parasitic wasps are very beneficial
to humans since they parasitize many different kinds of harmful insect pests. They live outdoors and are usually accidental indoor invaders, often attracted to lights.
They cause no harm to humans, pets, structures, possessions or crops. However, some Ichneumon wasps can sting severely when mishandled. |
