| Perennial hibiscus (rose mallow) can be pruned in the spring, just as new growth begins to appear. To keep it under control (once you've pruned it back), just pinch the tips of the stems regularly. This will encourage new growth near the center of the plant.

| Mums are traditionally pinched or sheared back every other week or so from early spring until about the middle of July. This treatment keeps the plants dense and bushy and causes them to produce many more blooming tips. It also delays blooming until later in the season. Some mums are earlier blooming than others, in spite of our best efforts. Cut the stems back to a lower-branching stem, preferably one with flower buds already forming.

| Named varieties of hybrid clematis bloom in two different ways: Some bloom on wood grown the previous year and some on wood grown in the same year. Clematis in the Jackman group of hybrids (such as jackmanii) bloom on new growth (wood grown in the same year). You'll have to watch where the blossoms occur on the other clematis to determine if they are on new or old wood. If you wish to prune the Jackman clematis, do so in spring as the buds swell or |

| You can fertilize in the spring, after new growth has begun. Use a balanced plant food (5-10-10 or 8-8-8), such as Miracle-Gro All Purpose broadcast over the root area under the canopy of the tree. |

| Rhododendrons develop new leaf and flower buds directly below the old flower trusses, so if you trim back the branches you'll lose next year's bloom. You might want to make pruning a 2-3 year project, removing only some of the branch tips this year and some next year, in order to preserve at least half of the blooms each season. They can be kept in shape by removing about one-third of the length of each branch. |

| On trees, use pruning shears to remove diseased, dead or crisscrossing branches so light can reach the tree's interior, improving its health and appearance. Cut at an angle, and when possible, cut with an upward motion to avoid tearing bark. |
